Summary
Biopolix Materiais Tecnológicos was featured in Pesquisa FAPESP magazine in a report on the development of bioplastics in Brazil.
The article explains how we develop bioresins and biocomposites for biodegradable bioplastics from plant residues, such as wood flour and other biomaterials. These can replace conventional plastics in single-use applications, including cutlery and packaging.
One of the project's most significant milestones was adapting the formulation for large-scale industrial machinery without requiring new equipment. This makes it possible to manufacture products such as ice-cream spoons using multi-cavity moulds, an essential step towards industrial-scale production.
We have now demonstrated that the material:
- ✔ withstands temperature variations from when ice cream is served until it is consumed;
- ✔ does not alter the taste of food;
- ✔ maintains adequate mechanical strength;
- ✔ can biodegrade in approximately 145 days under suitable conditions.
This progress was only possible through collaboration between Biopolix, Senai São Paulo, Sebrae for Startups, UpLab | SENAI São Paulo, EMBRAPII – the Brazilian Industrial Research and Innovation Company, universities and innovation partners. It demonstrates how science and industry can work together to address one of the greatest environmental challenges of our time: replacing fossil-based plastics.
We are now expanding our partnerships with plastics processors and investors to bring these sustainable materials to market on a larger scale.
Read and share: we have Brazilian solutions to a global problem!
